A tea made from the leaves has long been considered an effective cough treatment as well as a cure for hiccups.

A combination of Lobelia (Lobelia inflata) and Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) is used as an antispasmodic.

Chestnut tea has been used to treat diarrhea and whooping cough.

A poultice may be used to treat bleeding hemorrhoids.
